M-1 RAIL is a non-profit organization formed in 2007 to lead the design, construction, and future operation of a 3.3-mile circulating streetcar along Woodward Avenue between Congress Street and West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, Michigan. M-1 RAIL is an unprecedented public-private partnership and model for regional collaboration Notably, the first major transit project being led and funded by both private businesses, philanthropic organizations, in partnership with local government, the State of Michigan, and U.S. Department of Transportation.
Iafrate Construction was subcontracted by Stacy Witbeck, Inc. (SWI) to perform the earth excavation, under drains, geotextile separator, concrete pavement, curbs, and sidewalk on this project while they perform all track related work items. Working around the SWI track section, and the multi-phase schedule has created many non-typical pavement panels, but after many submittals
Iafrate Construction has worked closely with SWI on meeting the project schedule, but due to many of the unforeseen delays SWI has directed us to place concrete pavement and sidewalk though the winter months on a T&M basis using ground heaters, and insulation blankets in an effort meet the final completion date. Careful monitoring of the slab temperatures, and finish was necessary to try provide a finish product that may meet the required 5-year warranty.
