Ann Arbor Parking Deck
Ann Arbor, MI
The City of Ann Arbor underground parking deck is located off of 5th Street between William and Liberty Streets. It is in a very tight parcel of land with historic structures within three feet of the back of the new parking deck wall. Eventually the closing and removal of 5th Street was necessary as part of the new deck will be under 5th Street. The main post office and library are also neighbors to the site.
Angelo Iafrate’s project scope was excavation of 135,000 cubic yards of earth, to an average depth of 50 feet from street level, along with the appropriate dewatering necessary to produce a base ready for footing work. The contract called for close work with the earth retention system subcontractor to aid in the removal of their spoils and coordination for installation of tie-backs to hold the piles in place.
Since this project is located in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor it required sound traffic control and routing for the trucking required to remove the large quantity of material leaving the site. Approximately 90% of the material excavated was screened and used in other local projects as sound backfill for utility work.
