Meldahl Hydroelectric Plant

Angelo Iafrate Construction Co. was retained as the Prime Contractor by American Municipal Power for the  $24,000,000 Cofferdam & Excavation project - the first phase of construction of the Meldahl Hydroelectric Plant located along the Ohio River and adjacent to the Meldahl Lock & Dam in Foster, Kentucky owned and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers.


As the Prime Contractor, Iafrate was responsible for the coordination and execution of all work associated with this heavy civil project including, but not limited to, clearing & grubbing, cofferdam construction, shoreline protection and embankment, earth excavation and embankment, cement bentonite cut-off wall, dewatering, concrete overflow structure construction and miscellaneous site improvements.


Iafrate self-performed the excavation, embankment, and on-site disposal of 1,250,000 cyd’s of soil located along the Ohio River. Iafrate placed in excess of 35,000 tons of heavy rip rap for spillway protection.


Iafrate subcontracted the installation of an extensive dewatering system consisting of over 25 deep wells, placement of over 250,000 tons of heavy rip rap for cofferdam embankment and protection, installation of an 80’ deep cement-bentonite slurry cut-off wall and the concrete flood control structure.
